UEFA B with the Welsh FA

Having represented Wales at both senior and U21 level during my Professional career it felt right to join the Uefa B coaching course down in Newport with the WelshFA. Having previously experienced a similar coaching course in England i was prepared in my mind of what to expect. How wrong that proved to be!!!
I knew i needed the qualifications and training to progress into coaching but i wanted to be able to coach in my own style with my own thoughts and ideas.

With many applying only 22 candidates were allowed onto the course, ranging from past & present footballers to coaches, managers, sports scientists and analysts.
Many household names included Peter Crouch, Ahmed Hossam (Mido), Ryan Shawcross, Titus Bramble, Ian Walker, Danny Collins, Andy Payton, John Whitney, Darel Russell Stuart Fleetwood and Andy Rose.

Now its no secret to the football world the recent success of the Welsh National Football team, Was it luck? Was it down to Gareth Bale? Now don’t get me wrong Gareth Bale is a genius and his performances have guided the team to France but the next 8 days were to convince me that this process started a long time ago and that the slogan #TOGETHERSTRONGER is evident not only in the players and staff but as a nation!

Wales qualified for France 2016 with the slogan Together Stronger

After the impressive introduction we were told what to expect, my doubts were instantly squashed when they mentioned the style in how they teach to coach, they said “We give you all the tools and the framework, you create your own philosophy”.

We had 8 days of intense training some days from 7am to 10pm, our days were filled with everything you could think of to become not only a better coach but a person as well.
Some of the many topics included:

  • First Aid Awareness
  • Growth & Maturation
  • Physical Development
  • Coaching Styles
  • Game Analysis
  • Mental preperation
  • Presentation Skills
  • Child Welfare
  • Pratical Coaching
  • Planning Sessions
  • Tactical Formations

From the first day to the last i couldn’t fault a thing, the accommodation at the St Pierre Marriott hotel was first class, every meeting was professional, clear and always engaged the group. One of the most important topics in my eyes was the FIRST AID AWARENESS, we all participated and we were given some invaluable information from Kevin Fulthorpe.

Brian Stock and other candidates get to grips with the first aid course on their uefa B badges with the welsh fa.

So looking back on a very memorable experience, i revert back to what i said earlier regarding the Welsh National team. Having represented Wales in 2009 the transformation in 7 years has been incredible! With the European 2016 Championships on the horizon every member of staff and even the general public are buzzing.

So was it luck that Wales qualified? Absolutely no chance, this process started a long time ago, I believe there are some key influences over that time period from the late Gary Speed to present boss Chris Coleman. Wales Technical Director and assistant manager Osian Roberts has influenced the same process right through every age group so its not only the senior players representing their country that have the same mentality and tactics its reinforced right through the system so the transition to senior level will be seamless.

Gary Speed, Chris Coleman and Osian Roberts have influenced welsh football over the years.

I can now see why the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera, Roberto Martinez and Marcel Desailly all decided to do their coaching badges in Wales, i received incredible information that in my 19 years as a player i have never had, i learned how to coach from imaginative staff and throughout a very intense 8 days i cannot thank the Welsh FA, Osian Roberts, Carl Darlington and his team enough. The future certainly looks very bright for Welsh football.
I feel i have my own paintbrush, paint and blank canvas….. Now its up to me to go paint my own picture!

Good luck in the Euros…… #TOGETHERSTRONGER

What are the chances of a grassroots coach gaining a place on the Welsh UEFA B?

The Welsh Uefa B intense courses run every year, there is no harm in applying…. The English FA have regular courses in the area, Dorset Fa & Hampshire Fa have this information online.
